Frequently asked questions

Is this wildfire map live?
Yes. The interactive map loads current wildfire data directly from the NIFC feed each time you open it and refreshes every few minutes automatically.
What do the marker colors and sizes mean?
Each marker is a wildfire. Color shows containment (red = under 30%, orange 30–60%, yellow 60–90%, green 90%+), and marker size reflects the fire’s area in acres. Shaded outlines are official fire perimeters.
Can I see wildfire smoke on the map?
Yes. The live dashboard includes a current smoke layer (NOAA HMS) and an hourly smoke forecast (HRRR-Smoke) you can play forward in time, plus wind direction.
Where does the wildfire data come from?
Incidents and perimeters come from NIFC WFIGS, satellite imagery from Esri, and smoke/weather from NOAA. See the sources listed on each page.
